The annual FIH Global Youth Challenge programme was celebrated on the 15th of May 2011 in Accra, with young hockey enthusiasts mainly girls between the ages of 5 and 13 from the metropolis of Accra. Departing from the normal hockey pitch programmes, this year’s Accra Global Youth Challenge programme was held at a car park, where the children through fun learnt some of the basics of the game and engaged themselves in some mini games.
The FIH theme for the year “AGE FIT” found expression in the Accra programme where over 54 participants were grouped in ages of 5-7, 8-10 and11-13. After learning some simple basic technical drills in the game, the children played some fun mini hockey games of 3v0 for the under 7 age group, 3v3 for those in the 8 – 10 age category, and a 6 aside game for children between ages 11 and 13.
Playing on the partly rough surface of the car park was all fun for the children who are used to playing only on smooth surfaces. The few parents who accompanied their children to the programme and the children themselves left with funny memories which will stay with them for a long time. The trainers and coaches include Samuel Marfo, Paul Adu and Edmond Zankoh
